Al Gore’s New Love for the Philippines

June 6, 2010

“Korni naman!”, one Filipino commenter said. Sure, this video is quite corny as many may agree.  So the question is, who rocked the boat?  The Philippine Inquirer, the nation’s most widely read newspaper wrote in one of their Sunday top stories:

Gore’s visit to the Philippines comes on the heels of his separation from his wife of 40 years, Tipper, announced via an e-mail sent out to friends and associates. Legarda, the mother of two boys, is considered a single parent, having had her marriage to Jose Antonio Leviste, a former Batangas governor who is now serving a jail sentence for homicide, annulled some three years ago. But will Gore, 62, and Legarda, 50, cross paths during his whirlwind visit? The likelihood is very high, said one tweeter. Legarda’s office confirmed Saturday that she will be in the audience to listen to Gore speak on a favorite topic—climate change. Another interesting tidbit offered by her office is that the senator has been invited to a “private” dinner after the talk. ABS-CBN and dzMM talk show host Julius Babao apparently started it all when he threw a question to his followers two days ago. “Former VP Al Gore should date Sen. Loren Legarda. After all they are both environmentalists. What do you think?” From a curt “cool!” to a negative, “baduy (tacky),” the gossip spread like wildfire, fanned largely by restive Internet denizens. ABC-5 reporter Jovy Francisco cast his vote for the duo by saying: “I will repeat, move over Brangelina, Kimerald (Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson) and Melason (Pinoy Big Brother love duo Melay and Jason), let’s support Le’ Goreda …”

It’s more than Twitter gossip. Sen. Loren Legarda and Al Gore both lost in a (vice-)presidental race. Both are global warming filmmakers. This news got widely unnoticed last January as it was told without malice in the U.S. Here it goes: “Award-winning independent filmmaker Brillante “Dante” Mendoza is halfway through the filming of Buhos, a documentary on climate change co-produced by Senator Loren Legarda. “This is not a political ad campaign,” Mendoza told Inquirer Enter tainment last Jan. 15. “I simply believe in the senator’s advocacy. Climate change was never a popular topic here in our country. Before we got hit by Storm ‘Ondoy,’ only a few would care to listen or watch something about the environment.” As the title suggests, the documentary will focus on the recent flash floods and heavy rains that ravaged the country. Mendoza documented the senator’s visits to areas mostly affected by Ondoy, like Marikina, Malabon, Laguna and Pampanga. Buhos will also tackle smoke and noise pollution, the director said. A similar documentary, released in 2006, features former United States Vice President Al Gore talking about global warming and it’s effects.” (quoted from Th e A s i a n J o u r n a l N EW YO R K / N EW J E R S E Y, J a n u a r y 22 , 20 1 0)

Fast forward: June 8, 2010.

algore_fullUpdate: Al Gore was still wearing his wedding ring. Loren Legarda sat in the Audience. The ” private dinner” turned out to be a Gala-Dinner with Al Gore, Loren Legarda and SMprime-President and organizer Hans Sy sitting  at the same table.  Gore left Manila that same night.

On a more serious note, Climatepatrol was sitting in the audience as well. A sceptical review will follow.
